Analysis of Dinner Party Essay
The text under analysis is named The Dinner Party, written by Nicholas Monsarrat. Monsarrat is a British novelist known for his sea stories and his novels, The Tribe That Lost Its Head and its sequel, Richer Than All His Tribe. The Dinner Party is a piece of narration. It tells us about a rich man (uncle Octavian), who was a hospitable and friendly man, and liked to give parties ââ¬â until January 3, 1925. It was his fifty-fifth birthday. As usually on such a day he was giving a party, a party for twelve people. All of them were old friends. During the party he was admired a magnificent diamond ring on the princessââ¬â¢s hand. Then the ring was passed from hand to hand, and so it was lost or stolen although all the guests were close friends. Nobody returned the princessââ¬â¢s ring back, so it was never found and it never appeared. Since that event Uncle Octavian never gave a single lunch or dinner party for the last thirty years of his life. He died a comparatively poor man with the special sadness of a hospitable host. The purpose of the author is to show how itââ¬â¢s significant to have values, principles and it doesnââ¬â¢t make a difference if you are poor or rich. Uncle Octavian believed in his friends and suffered from this at the end as one person, one of his close friends is appeared to be a thief. Uncle Octavian lost all his friends and was never able to believe anyone from that day. The story is well-structured, so it may be divided into the following parts: exposition, complication, conflict, climax and denouement. The first part begins with ââ¬Å"There are still some rich people â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ and ends with ââ¬Å"â⬠¦until January 3, 1925.ââ¬Å" It tells us about rich people in their princess world and claims that even those have their problems. In this part we meet with the author, unnamed, and the main character (my uncle Octavian), who is described as a charming, hospitable and most amiable man with the help of epithets. The second part begins with the words ââ¬Å"Let me tell you a story â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ and ends with ââ¬Å"all old and intimate friends of my uncle Octavian.â⬠This passage describes the authorââ¬â¢s feelings about staying at such event ââ¬â the 55th birthday of his uncle, and the party itself. Here we observe a description of uncleââ¬â¢s friends and to stress how rich and important the friends of Octavian were the author uses metaphor ââ¬Å"old flamesâ⬠, and epithets such as ââ¬Å"respective husbandsâ⬠, ââ¬Å"exceptional intelligence and his fabulous American wifeâ⬠. The next part begins with ââ¬Å"Towards the end of a wonderful dinner â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ and finishes with ââ¬Å"â⬠¦saw her pass it on.â⬠Here we becomeà acquainted with a princess and her magnificent ring, loved by everyone at the table. The ring itself is described very vividly to stress its importance for example here the author uses an allusion to Genghis Khan. The climax of t he story is the moment when everyone understands that the ring is lost or stolen. Here the author describes dreadful embarrassment of Uncle Octavianââ¬â¢s cherished friends and uncleââ¬â¢s belief in good of his close friends. Colorful epithets are used to show growing anxiety among the guests: dreadful, fruitless. In the epilogue we see that the ring was not never found and Octavian died poor man, never throwing a single party again as he lost his trust in people. Monsarrat uses antithesis to express how uncleââ¬â¢s life has changed since his 55th birthday: at the beginning he writes that he was ââ¬Å"a happy rich manâ⬠, at the end ââ¬Å"comparatively poorâ⬠. Poor here is also a metaphor used not only to describe his financial status, but also to show his inner feelings after that date ââ¬â he lost his trust, his beliefs were deceived. The tone of the story is grammatical and ironical at the same time, as the theme is judging people of being such liars even among friends ââ¬â the theme itself is quite ironical.

Analysing the traditional approach to quality management
Analysing the traditional approach to quality management Quality in its simple terms mean activities designed in a manner to improve organisation and its services. Quality also means to learn what you are doing and how to do it better. It also means to find out ways you need to change for improving services to the ultimate users. Consumerââ¬âQualityââ¬âProducer Quality : From the consumerââ¬â¢s point of view is price. From the producerââ¬â¢s point is cost. But remember always the Customerââ¬â¢s view must reign supreme. Dimensions of quality : Products. 1} Performance : Basic operating characteristics of D a product. Example; A car : how good are the brakes, body, mileage, etc of a car. 2} Features : Any special characteristics added to the product. e.g; special interiors added in the Car. 3} Reliability : The expected time limit for the product to deliver its best. E.g; approximate mileage of the car before it needs service. 4} Durability : Will the product last long enough up to expected time limit. 5} Conformance : Does the product meets pre established standards. 6} Serviceability : How easy is to get the service repairs, speed of repairs and the cost incurred in providing service. 7} Safety : Is the product safe enough to meet all the safety requirements as prescribed. 8} Perceptions : Perceptions based on branding, advertising etc; Does the product meets the quality standard set by a particular brand name. 9} Appearance : The human senses of sight, taste and smell is met to the well established standard. Other more Dimension of Quality : Quality of design : The design of the product must be such satisfying the needs of the customers. Quality of production process : The customers needs and wants must be met by the product. Quality of conformance : All the legal requirements and the specifications are met by the product or service. Quality of customer service : Company and customer relation must be met by with highest level of accuracy. Customers must be satisfied with the services provided and m ust feel are taken care of. Organisational quality culture : One of the most important attributes towards quality is that the seriousness of the whole organisation in achieving quality. Quality management can be considered to have three main components: quality control, quality assurance and quality improvement. Quality management is focused not only on product quality, but also the means to achieve it. Quality management therefore uses quality assurance and control of processes as well as products to achieve more consistent quality. The Traditional approach to quality management : TRADITIONAL APPROACH As defined by Fetter, and quoted in Johnson, Kast and Rosenzweig [11] as the function of ensuring the attributes of the product conform to prescribed standards and that their relationships are maintained. The emphasis laid in traditional approach was on product inspection and rejection and the most crucial decision of time for when and what to inspect and what quantity to inspect. For this purpose, the features of the product and the cost involved needed to be considered. The process of inspecting the product might have been a random selection or a 100% check. The responsibility of assuring the product quality lied with the quality control department but generally the quality managers used to report directly to production managers or the plant manager. The managers on the contrary were in immense pressure to meet the production targets and therefore many times to meet the production targets used to let go the faulty goods. This resulted in increased customer complaints or even if the customer did not complain they never came resulting in rise in warranty cost. The managers were generally tolerant of high work scrap levels and rework inefficiencies.

Clean room assignment engineering practice Lab Report
Clean room assignment engineering practice - Lab Report Example The next step in the fabrication process is to create the buried channels by implanting phosphorous ions in areas that will eventually be covered by polysilicon gate electrodes. The n-type semiconductor formed by phosphorus contains negatively charged electrons as the primary charge carriers and forms a pn-type diode structure, which serves to localize potential wells deep beneath the silicon/silicon dioxide interface. The potential well illustrated in the central portion of Figure 1 is a schematic drawing of the diode structure. The primary function of the buried channel is to localize integrated electrons away from the silicon/silicon dioxide interface, where they can become trapped during charge transfer. By localizing charge deep within the p-type silicon substrate, transfer of charge occurs more efficiently with a minimum of residual charge remaining in the gate. After the buried channels are formed within the silicon substrate, a layer of silicon dioxide is thermally grown on the silicon wafer surface to provide an insulating base for the gate electrodes. Next, a phosphorous-doped layer of polycrystalline silicon (polysilicon) about 5,000 angstroms thick is grown on top of the oxide layer. This layer of polysilicon comprises the gate electrodes (see Figure 1) and is transparent to visible light, making it an ideal substance for use in CCDs. Although, the fabrication of a complete CCD takes additional steps, the basics of the MOS capacitor assembly have been completed at this point." Epidemiology Paper - Essay Example These viruses are HIV-1 and HIV-2. HIV-2 virus is mostly found in Africa particularly West Africa, while HIV-1 is the major cause of HIV/AIDS basically in all regions of the world. These viruses attack the immune system and they have the capacity to become part of the human DNA. There are many indications of HIV/AIDS. it is important to assert the fact that the signs or indications of this disease are analogous to the signs or indications of a range of other common diseases that affect human beings. However, the signs and indications of HIV/AIDS are prolonged and more rigorous as compared to those of other common disease. Signs that are prevalent at the initial stages of the disease include high fever, lilac or lavender blemishes or spots on the skin, wound and abscesses that fail to heal when medicated, long lasting weariness and fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, fast or swift loss of weight, sore or broad whitish looking glaze in the orifice and anus, frequent or recurring flu and diarrhoea (Mayer and Pizer, 2004). According to the World Health Organization (2014), there are a number of ways through which HIV/AIDS can be transmitted. These include all incidents that exposes the blood of an individual to that of an infected person through sex, through sharing needles and other prickly substances such as razor blades. This disease can also be transmitted from a mother to her unborn child if measures are not taken, and also through blood transfusion. There are many complications of HIV/AIDS that are as a result of the abating of the immune system. This makes infected individuals prone to a range of other diseases or complications otherwise referred to as opportunistic ailments. One of the most common complication of HIV/AIDS include tuberculosis and is one of the major causes of death among those infected. Other complications include bacterial infections such as salmonellosis, candidiasis, cryptococcal menengitis, cancers, wasting syndrome,

Industry Analysis by Stage in PLC - Essay Example The market is expected to grow continually for a decade. At 2013, the forecasted market value is $10.7 billion with a 9.4% growth from 2008 and a market volume of 3.8 billion liters with an 8.5% increase since 2008. (Datamonitor, 2008) The condition of the ice cream industry is influenced by several external factors. Social factors such as health issues can affect the buying behavior of consumers. The recent peanut butter recall due to contamination has decreased retail sales on peanut flavored ice cream. Obesity concerns and health trends has pushed manufacturers to launch new products that address the growing trends. (Peot, 2008) Economic factors such as recession affect the buying behavior of consumers and packaging techniques of producers. According to Berry, consumers budget their purchases during slower economic times and prefer to eat ice cream at home. The supermarket sales of ice cream increased because of this purchasing behavior. (Berry, 2009) Supermarket store chains have benefited an increase in sales of their private labels through this change (Ice Cream Going Private Label, 2009). Manufacturers, on the other hand, downsize its packaging due to increased raw material costs and energy expenditures. They have decreased the packaging volume in order to maintain, if not lower, the retail price of their products. (Berry, 2009) The US ice cream market is assessed as highly competitive. ... Case Study Example In the theme the differentiation exists in terms of rides and attractions being offered, the faà §ade and architecture; and the employees and food being served. Thus, this uniqueness and control of environment makes Disney an enthralling experience. (Project 2006) Hence, when Disney decided to expand its business, it came up with two options for opening the theme park: Barcelona and Paris. However, due to the benefits in form of subsidies and tax incentives being offered by the French government; Paris was the final choice. Another major reason for opting for Paris was the market potential that the city offered. Within a 160 km radius of the proposed site for Euro Disney a population of sixteen million lived. Not just this, the presence of an efficient transportation network made Paris an ideal location. Even if Euro Disney would have had a lower penetration in the market as compared to its sister parks in California and Florida; the market size was huge giving a higher utilization of the capacity. Another attractive feature for opening a theme park in Europe was that the Europeans had a different pattern of spending their vacations. Not only is the time period of the holidays which Europeans enjoy longer than the American citizens. But the Europeans also take frequent smaller breaks throughout the year. Disney also kept in few the family size and the disposable incomes which the target audience was composing of. And thus, kept keeping these trends in mind Disney started its new venture. Another smart thing which Disney did when starting this venture was that it financed this project in a way that the risk was minimized. Disney floated a new company in the market called the Euro Disney SCA. Through this company the financial arrangements were made in a manner that the Walt Disney group had a 49% holding where as the rest of the share was generated by raising capital from the public. Further more, Disney was
